The Leek Experiment

by julieg 3. June 2009 15:37
Tonight’s the night! Not for watering (see previous blog) but for planting the leeks. We are doing a bit of an experiment. We planted some leeks in trays in the greenhouse back in March and they are now a reasonable size, although not the thickness of pencils as per the seed packet. The thing is, I planted them in peat-free compost and that stuff just dries out to dust every day. Well, I’ve got fed up watering them (oh, there we go again!) and I’ve now decided to put them out on the allotment, ready or not. Back at the beginning of April I planted some seeds direct into a seedbed on the allotment and they are still quite small so they can stay there a while longer. We shall see which lot do the best. We’ve got two varieties to try: Prizetaker which are an autumn variety and Musselburgh which are winter.
