It is in the nature of owning an allotment that there is often too much of one particular thing to eat at once. At the moment, we have lots of lettuce and it feels good to be able to give it away to friends (or swap it!). I’m even prepared to share some of it with nature: if some of the raspberries get eaten by birds, ok; if the caterpillars have a good munch on the cabbages, enjoy them while you can because I’ve got my scissors ready; I might even find it in me to forgive the odd slug its strawberry. However, when the local badger bides his time until our carrots are the perfect size on which to gorge, I am not so happy. A whole line of carrots disappeared one night and Mr Badger was so stuffed he had the audacity to leave a half-eaten carrot on the path. Well, don’t think you’re coming back for seconds tonight – we got there first!
