On the Defence

So far, the badger(s) has had Lindsey and Stuart’s, ours, Nick’s and Chris and Jimmy’s carrots. I think we are all of the same idea that next year’s carrots will be planted in boxes in our back gardens. I got the idea from Richard and Tina who have done exactly that. Richard said they found an old plastic fish box from a fishing boat which they picked up on the beach (that’s the allotment spirit!).  They filled it with normal seed compost and after planting the seeds put an old sheet of glass across the top – with an inch gap for the air to circulate – which acted like a mini greenhouse. When the plants were nearly touching it they took it off. He said that there must be at least 100 carrots in it – they’ve been pulling them up and munching on them for weeks. Ok, don’t rub it in!

Three allotments still remain untouched, one of which is Maggie’s. However, I have seen a roll of wire fencing on her allotment so I’m guessing that she is planning on putting up some defences before the badger gets a whiff of her carrots. She has also installed a new security guard. I hope he does the job on the badgers because the birds don’t seem too concerned!
