Magic lettuce

by julieg 3. July 2009 09:40

Our line of mixed lettuce is the cut and come again type and despite the hot weather it still hasn’t bolted, unlike the rocket and spinach.I probably didn’t thin out the seedlings enough at their early stage of growth so the different types of lettuce are all jammed together: it looks like a small hedge! Instead of cutting it and letting it come again, I decided to just pull up whole individual plants to create some breathing space for the rest of the leaves and to try and stop them getting fungal disease. I gave some to a friend and told her to try sticking them in a vase, as they had their roots attached, instead of putting them in the fridge.  She has told me since that it works a treat.  I also find that cut lettuce stores better when put in an old pillowcase before putting in the fridge and sometimes limp lettuce and rocket can be restored by leaving it to soak in a bowl of cold water.

Anyway, this morning, I happened to notice the mixed lettuce and all the gaps have disappeared and it looks like a small hedge again. It’s not only cut and come again, it’s magic lettuce.
