Help! I’ve got no worms

by julieg 15. July 2009 15:09

I take all of our peelings and dead flowers over to the allotment to put in the compost bins but I am keen to make the most of other food waste. I understood that a wormery could help in this respect and that it would also produce a liquid that could be used as an organic fertilizer. A few years ago, before we even had an allotment, I had invested in a wormery and I seem to remember it cost close to £100. Unfortunately the worms died not long after as I had left the wormery outside and I think they drowned.

It took me until a couple of months ago to get around to ordering a ‘rescue pack’ of worms which came with worm treat (I wonder if they really appreciate that!) and a lime mix which all cost around £35. This time I put them under a lean-to for shelter. Anyway, within a couple of days they died. So I rang the company who supplied the worms and they said that it was probably due to a dodgy batch of compost they had given me for the worms to get started on. I was concerned not to kill the things again and after picking up the next pot of worms I asked for advice and was told to leave them to it for a couple of months and just stir in some lime every week.

Well, surprise surprise, they have died again. I am starting to feel either ripped off, careless or foolish. Does anyone know what I did wrong and whether it’s worth trying again?
