Hurrah! The sun is shining at last. I dug up all of our onions the day before last on the promise of sunshine (my husband is a keen watcher of the weather forecasts and I followed his expertise) and yesterday the onions lay soaking in the rain! Hopefully we shall have a couple of days of nice weather so they can dry off ready for storing. Last year we only planted red onion sets and some shallots, both donated by Lindsey and Stuart – I expect they couldn’t believe that we had an allotment and hadn’t decided to put in one of the classic allotment vegetables. We found that the red onions didn’t store for very long so this year we’ve put in white onions as well. There may not be any giants like Nick’s, but overall they’ve grown really well and you get an awful lot of onions for a small area of ground. I love onions and can’t wait to use them for onion jam, french onion soup and caramelised onion tart.
