Last chance to plant some seeds

by julieg 26. August 2009 14:30
It has been on my ‘to do’ list for about a month to get some more seeds going. It’s just that there is so much to harvest at this time that the idea of producing more food to eat doesn’t feel very pressing. Anyway, last night, having picked another three meals worth of climbing French beans, I pulled out the old shoe box of seeds and identified a few that I might still just get away with planting now: coriander, chervil, pak choi, winter hardy White Lisbon spring onions, Scenic spinach, rocket, All Year Round lettuce and watercress.  The area in which I planted them has already had a crop of carrots and salad stuff which have been and gone, so in case the soil was struggling for nutrients (I guess this might be an issue when you plant one crop after another – does anyone know?) I sprinkled over some fish blood and bone first.  Hilary gave me a good tip about how to plant seeds: water the shallow trench first before sowing the seeds and then cover with dry soil. Firstly, the seeds don’t get washed all over the place which they might if you water them after planting; secondly, the dry soil stops the moisture from evaporating, helping to keep moisture around the seeds.
