It really felt like autumn last night over on the allotment. The sky was grey and a steady drizzle fell from the sky. I had on three layers and a waterproof and I only just felt ok. But it didn’t send me home. Oh no! Not when my husband is spending nearly the whole of this week sailing at the Torquay and Dartmouth regattas. It is still the summer holidays and that means I get little break from looking after the children. So any opportunity I get, even if it is an hour after dinner in the rain, I take myself off to the allotment for a little ‘me time’ and to get a few jobs done. Actually, it’s surprising how much you can get done given a deadline (sunset) and the fact that there’s no-one else there (to talk to and generally get distracted by). Last night, despite the gloomy ‘summer’ weather, I picked more french and runner beans, pulled out the last of the beetroot, trimmed off the yellow and dead leaves from the parsnips and even pulled out several bucket-loads of weeds. It was a satisfying evening’s work but I came home feeling slightly concerned at the number of slugs and snails I came across – and dispatched. I hope it’s not the beginning of an epidemic.
