Anyone got a glut of tomatoes?

by julieg 2. September 2009 04:52
On the 27th July I posted a picture of our neglected tomato plants languishing in their dry grow-bags and starved of nutrients. Well, nature is a truly tenacious creature! See the photo I took yesterday. The plants still look sick/dead but they are managing to produce a supply (meagre compared to better cared-for plants I’m sure - but enough for us nevertheless) of Golden Sunrise, Sweet Olive and Tumbling Tom tomatoes. I would have liked a huge glut so that I could have turned them into batches of lovely tomato sauce to put in the freezer, but I am grateful for getting any at all.Considering the plight of this year’s tomatoes I think it is only fair not to grow tomatoes again.  It’s just not fair on them. And besides, the cost of grow-bags, tomotorite and seeds outweighs the returns. I think I will leave growing tomatoes to others who have big greenhouses (you know who you are, Kate!) and who remember to water and feed them. Maybe next year we can do a swap for my courgettes, beans, sweet peas, potatoes, raspberries, whatever you fancy...

Oh, you poor poor things!

That's not so bad!
